Insurance is an interesting industry.
I say that because in doing the research for this post, I came across several insurance coverages that I honestly and truly thought were just rumors. Nope. They are real, and real people have purchased them, and real insurance companies have sold them. We all know the main things insurance protects like our homes, automobiles, boats, RV’s, businesses, and even our lives. However, did you know that you can purchase alien abduction insurance? Yep. It’s true!! Did you know you can get insurance coverage for your fantasy sports leagues? Yep. That’s true too!! So, to give you a glimpse of the weirder side of the insurance industry, here are 6 Out of this World Insurance Coverages You Didn’t Know you Could Get.
6 Out Of This World Insurance Coverages You Didn’t Know You Could Get
1.) Alien Abduction Insurance
It’s a thing!
I am not sure if it’s because of E.T., Close Encounters of a Third Kind, X Files, or a combination of all three, but alien abduction insurance is a legit thing. As a matter of fact over 20,000 people in the United States have purchased alien abduction insurance. However, there are a few requirements before the policy will payout: receiving benefits from the claim is dependent on your ability to have an alien’s signature or prove you were abducted via photos or other visual proof.
One claimant submitted a doctor’s note as evidence, stating he received a bodily implant during an alien abduction and the implant was made of a substance not found on earth. Some insurers offer alien abduction policies for about $150 for $1.5 million in coverage.
Here’s the crazy thing:
It’s been paid out TWICE!!
2.) Fantasy Sports League Insurance
Are you tired of losing money every year in your fantasy league because some big star goes and get’s himself hurt in a season ending injury? Well, fortune is finally shining upon you my friend. If you have perpetually picked the guy voted “Most Likely To Cost You Your Fantasy Season” and your season have been ruined because of it, you can now buy fantasy sports league insurance.
Sports fans now have the option to purchase insurance for fantasy baseball, basketball or football teams. Companies such as Intermark Insurance Agency offers fantasy sports policies which return your financial investment in your fantasy league in the event a key player suffers a “season changing” injury. According to the company’s website, they paid claims to policyholders when football players including Andre Johnson, Jahvid Best and Darren McFadden got injured.
3.) Zombie Insurance
It’s not a matter of IF there will be a zombie apocalypse. It’s a matter of when!
With the weird zombie-like drug out break of 2012 that caused several people to go so crazy they literally started to eat people (remember that dude in Miami on the side of the road?), you can now purchase zombie insurance. Like alien abduction insurance, I think this may be a combination of “The Walking Dead,” crazy new drugs, and people’s fear that their neighbors are secretly cannibals leading to this insurance coverage.
However, while requests for this insurance has died down in the last few years (along with viewership in for “The Walking Dead,” coincidence?) several people have reportedly purchased zombie insurance policies from the respected Lloyds of London.
4.) Multiple Birth Insurance
As a father of five kids, I can understand the need for lots of insurance, but multiple birth insurance? What the heck is that? Well, it really boils down to this: having more babies than you thought you were. Think of a couple who find out their are pregnant. They head to the doctor, get ultrasounds, and prepare for one little bundle of joy. However, when the big day arrives instead of having one bundle of joy, they have two, three, or even more!!
That’s what this insurance is all about.
Covering multiple births.
Doctors will tell you that ultrasounds, x rays, etc. can totally be wrong in some cases, and can lead to parents finding out that their family went from having one new baby, to several. This insurance helps cover added expenses from having multiple births. However, it must be purchased within 11 weeks of conception and all ultrasounds must point to just one potential birth for payout.
5.) Lottery Winnings Insurance
This insurance is geared more toward business owners, simply because it deals with lottery pools at work. This insurance offers coverage for businesses that have employees that participate in lottery pools, where if the members of the company end up winning the lottery, there is coverage for the business should those employees quit.
Lloyd’s of London offers insurance coverage in the event a business loses its part or all of it’s staff to a winning lotto ticket. If two or more employees leave after winning the lottery, the employer receives a payout to soften the blow an help them recover during the time where their staff is diminished.
It sounds crazy, but it can and has happened in the past and caused significant issues for the businesses where the winning lottery tickets have been won.
6.) Ghost Insurance
Ghost insurance is a thing too!!
This insurance is for those places of business that get the mean ghosts to haunt their business. No Casper the friendly ghost here. This insurance pays out in the event someone is killed or permanently disabled by a ghost while on the premises of a business with ghost insurance.
You can’t make this stuff up folks!!
A hotel owner in England purchased a ghost insurance policy after hearing stories from guests about seeing ghost on the premise.
Lesson here: if you think your place of business is haunted you may want to look into getting some ghost insurance just to be on the safe side.
When it comes down to it there are some pretty crazy things that people have gotten insurance for. In future posts I will share even crazier insurances people have on their body parts!! For now, just remember that while some insurance is totally a waste of money, much of it isn’t and the best way to find out is to speak to an insurance professional about your specific needs.
Remember, insurance should never be cookie cutter. Every individual and family have different needs from their friends and neighbors when it comes to everything in life, including insurance.
